“Oh of course, five years of ballet and 4 of ballroom, that’s not what I’m worried about at al. Its just going to be…awkward,”she said, remembering the day she kissed Bryan on the cheek and told him she liked him.

Riley smiled. “Don’t worry, if I sense things getting too too…

Heather laughed, but felt grateful, “haha, thanks Riley. But whatever you do, try not to make him fall in love with you,” she said, only half joking.

Riley smiled. “Don’t worry, even if I did like him like that, I respect the dibs. You know I know you like him, I wouldn’t dare interfere with that.”

Heather smiled again and said, “you’re right, I know you’re a better friend than that.” When the timer on the dryer for their nails went off Heather continued, “oh hey, guess we’re done,” she looked at her phone, “shit, it’s 3 already, Bryan’s coming over in 20 minutes.” She threw down some money, yelled a thank you and grabbed Riley’s hand. “Alright, if I get pulled over, we’re rushing because I have a supposed sick little brother at home,” Heather said half joking, pulling Riley’s hand, walking as quickly as possible out of the nail salon and to her car.

Riley laughed as she was dragged out the door to the salon. As she climbed in the car and buckled her seatbelt, she shrugged. “Well I mean, if you’re flying down the road and we get pulled over and I look a little green, we can always say I had a little bad Japanese for lunch,” she pondered, smiling at her best friend.

Heather tilted her head back laughing as she pulled out of the driveway. She drove home as fast as she could back home. As she pulled in the driveway she breathed a sigh of relief, “oh thank god we got here with time to spare.” Heather unbuckled her seatbelt and unlocked the doors. She felt her stomach turn over and her hand shaking, she reached to open the door. “Riley…” she started.

Riley’s eyes widened as she saw the look on Heather’s face. At the speed they’d been going, she wouldn’t be too shocked if Heather was a bit nauseated, or nervous about the ball. “Everything okay, Heather?” Riley asked, concerned.

“My dress…is sleeveless…and my arms are…you know. I don’t want Bryan to see that,” Heather said thinking back to the night Riley found out that Heather cut and how Bryan had been on the opposite side of the counter; Heather wasn’t sure if Bryan had noticed that night, but even if he had, she wouldn’t want him to see it again.

Riley’s eyes widened with compassion. Nodding, she gave a little smile. “Of course, I’d always help you.” Linking her elbow with Heather’s, the two walked into the house. Riley stopped and turned to face Heather. She then began explaining the battle plan. “Alrighty, we’re going to need some concealer, powder, and base for those arms.” She took a glance at one of Heather’s arms as she rolled up the sleeves. “This shouldn’t be too hard to hide, seeing as how most of these are scars or bruises,” she noted.

Heather bit her lip then said, “there’s…there’s some in my room upstairs.” Heather led her up the stairs and down the long hallway to her room.

Riley chuckled as Heather dragged her down the hall. “You know, for as long as we’ve been friends, I’ve never been at your house before,” she said.

Heather gave her a weird look and said, “you loser, yes you have! The night Bryan came over!”

Riley then smacked her forehead. “Blonde at heart speaking,” she reminded Heather.

“You’re stupid,” Heather said jokingly, laughing as she opened the door and led Riley in. She picked up the huge white dress and said, “alright I guess I gotta put it on sooner or later.” She started undressing, hoping Riley didn’t mind. “I’m not shy,” Heather said, pulling her jeans off.

Riley smiled. “No, you’re confident.” She wasn’t the least bit weirded out at the fact Heather was changing. They were girls. What did one have that the other didn’t? Riley just shrugged it off. She pulled out her makeup bag and began rummaging through it for the base and powder.

Heather pulled off her socks and said to Riley, “are you sure you’ll be able to cover it with make-up?” Just as Heather remembered that she was expecting a friend from her ballroom class to come over and help her practice, she heard the doorbell. She said, “oh that must be Josh, we promised to run through a routine or two with me.” Forgetting she was still partially undressed, Heather sprinted downstairs and to the door and moments later she returned to Riley dragging the poor nerdy boy with her.

Riley totally disregarded Josh’s presence as she began to clean off all her makeup brushes and hook up all the hair tools. Shooting a quick smile at Heather, she then realized Heather was still half dressed. “Heather!!” she hissed.

Heather for a moment didn’t know what Riley was freaked about until she realized she was in nothing but her underwear and a cami. “Shit,” she thought to herself for several reasons, because she knew he didn’t have much time, because she knew how stupid it was to open the dor without pants, and because at that moment she knew both Josh and Riley could probably see just how thin she’d gotten. “Oh mygosh, I’m sorry Josh,” Heather quickly said, pulling her jeans back on.

Riley was stunned. Heather’s ribs were poking out, her stomach beyond flat. Every bone was almost visible. Riley could taste metal in her mouth. Heather’s mom. If it hadn’t been for the woman, Heather would be healthy. No wonder she almost passed out that day when she’d been with Bryan. Why she’d eaten like crazy that time. It all made sense now.

Heather noticed Riley looking at her and she quickly picked up the dress and started makingher way to her bathroom, saying “I’ll just… finish changing in here.” Heather changed into the dress and as soon as she zipped the zipper she glanced at the sink and saw the pearl bracelets she was supposed to wear with it. “Yes,” she thought, knowing they would save her jut as well as the make up, and these, she wouldn’t have to worry about coming off or ruining her gloves. As a tear fell from her eye, Heather’s hand, shaking, hovered over the razor. She bit her lip, knowing she couldn’t do this with Riley right outside the door in her room. She put her hand back at her side and looked down, suddenly feeling faint again. “Shit, I have to eat,” she mumbled, just before opening the door and seeing Riley and Josh again. “Don’t…say…a word,” Heather said smiling a little, not wanting attention about the dress.

Riley didn’t know what in the world to think. She just couldn’t comprehend why Heather wouldn’t eat. She’d interrogate her later, right now she was determined to get the right shade of makeup for Heather’s arms. (( I MISS YOU HORRIBLY, MESSAGE ME!! ))

Heather put down the bracelets, knowing they were ugly and said to Josh, “It’ll just be a little bit, Josh, and then we can go through a dance or two.” She then turned to Riley and gratefully said, “I will love you forever if this works…well I mean, I’ll love you forever anyway…but I just really need this!”

Riley nodded. “It’ll work alright…you just have to be extremely careful about people gripping your arms. If they grip down too hard, the makeup will wipe off.”
